SCOPELAND on IBM AS/400
Since November 2000 SCOPELAND Direct Server has been implemented on IBM AS/400. With this
additional portation SCOPELAND expands it’s platform for midsize and large companies, who use the IBM
AS/400 as their core system.
This development is significant. SCOPELAND Software GmbH usually does not extend its palette of the
supported server platforms with any specific system.
The image of the AS/400 as a proprietary system often prejudices consideration of the system with high
initial costs. This view is outdated.
Within the last years, IBM developed a system that includes many benefits:
§ 64 Bit-architecture for hardware and software (operating systems, database and database applications) –
that is also designed to accomodate 128-Bit-architecture.
§ 99.98 % Reliability – proven in many cases studies.
§ Total Cost of Ownership –based on high reliability and low support and maintance costs, maks the
AS/400 the most cost-effective server system available (e.g. a separate database manager is not necessary
because the database is integrated in the operating system, which includes the database manager).
§ Expansion – all usual industry standards are supported this enables communication with all other
platforms.
§ Security - the safety functions are below the operating system level and cannot be infiltrate by
applications.
§ Scalability – up to 12 CPU’s and 40GB Ram per AS/400 system.
Many medium and large-scale enterprises are convinced of the advantages of the AS/400. Especially in the
financial industry. ERP and Internet Services rely on this system.
For the portation of SCOPELAND on DB2/400 it was necessary to handle the special features of the
database on this system. Considering the common belief that the DB2/UDB and the DB2/400 (both products
of IBM) are very similar, we and IBM realized that the concepts of the DB2-Family are the same. However, each
system is based on different server platforms. An example is the absence of TableSpaces, which can be
defined separately on the AS/400. Also, the operating system takes care of storage management directly (on
the AS/400?).
The combination of IBM AS/400 and SCOPELAND will exite many users. The combination of the
advantages of the AS/400 and the software of SCOPELAND GmbH, opens new possibilities of analyzing data
on the AS/400 without large programming?-technical expenditure normally necessary on the AS/400. The
graphical interface of SCOPELAND presents a large advantage in contrast to the usual text-oriented
representation on green screens. Also the exceptional Internet functionalities of both products is remarkable!
That enables the possible representation of SCOPELAND as an applet in a Browser stored of on the AS/400.
